True or false: Whole-head application is the only way to get even colour.
Answer: False. Permanent hair colour is just that. It stays on your hair until you cut it off. So when roots start to show, there's no need to colour your whole head. Here's how to retouch and refresh like the pros for your best colour, root to tip.
Root Application
- Your favorite Clairol hair colour (gloves included)
- Wide-toothed comb
- 4 plastic jaw clips
- Old button-down shirt
- Old towels
Step One
- Remember to perform your allergy test 48 hours before colouring. See the instructions inside the box.
- First, gear up in the old shirt and towel. Then put on the Expert colourist Gloves provided in the kit.
- Section hair with comb into four equal parts. Secure each section with clips.
Step Two
- Mix hair colour according to package directions.
- Release one section of hair and apply colour to center part. Do not massage into scalp.
Step Three
- Spread the colour across the roots. Do not massage into scalp.
- Using the applicator tip, make a part halfway below center part. Flip hair over center part and apply colour to this new part.
- Repeat halfway partings until all roots in that section are covered.
- Repeat on remaining three sections.
Step Four
- Set the timer for five minutes less than your regular processing time or the time indicated by your strand test.
- When timer goes off, work the colour down from roots to ends. Use any leftover colour from the bottle.
- Leave on for five minutes. Rinse hair thoroughly with lukewarm water and condition according to package directions.
Step Five
- Style and show off your root-to-tip gorgeous colour!
